How to Use Diatomaceous Earth Granules in Soil:
- Prepare the Soil:
- Loosen the soil around your plants or in your planting area to help integrate the DEE-E.
- Apply DEE-E Chips:
- DEE-E granules into the top 1-2 inches of soil. A general guideline is about 1-2 tablespoons per square foot, adjusting based on soil volume and pest pressure.
- Layering Option:
- Alternatively, you can sprinkle the chips as a surface layer around plants. Over time, they will break down further, releasing the DEE-E.
- Water Lightly:
- Gentle watering will help settle the DEE-E and activate its pest-control properties, especially if you’ve used it on the surface.
- Repeat as Needed:
- Reapply chips periodically—especially after rain—as they will gradually break down.
Notes:
- Granules or pellets will take longer to break down and become effective compared to powder, but they can still help control pests and improve soil structure over time.

If you’ve never heard of diatomaceous earth before, “Diatomaceous Earth (DEE-E) is a natural product made up of fossilized remains of tiny, aquatic organisms called diatoms. Composed of the cell walls/shells of single cell diatoms, it easily crumbles to a fine powder.” You can find DE in countless products, most often in powder form.
